OUR HISTORY

THE HAYNES FAMILY

The Haynes Family originated in the northeast corner of Calhoun County in a small hamlet named "Lone Star,' South Carolina". The Haynes since the early 1800's were and still are well-known in that area. The family was one of the largest in the area and had a very deep religious background. Consequently the one and only African Methodist Episcopal Church of that community was named for the Haynes Family. The Haynes Chapel A.M.E. Church is on the St. Luke Circuit.

There in this little hamlet, Jim and Mary Haynes nurtured and reared five sons and four daughters. Sons: Irvin, Baker, Mattie, Jim, Jr. and Joseph and Daughters: Amy, Robecca, Mary, and Rosa. They worked hard on their small ten acre farm while also working as day laborers to make money to take care of the family needs. Jim and Mary instilled in their children, "one must work to take care of his physical needs." They ministered to the spiritual needs of their children through Bible Study, daily prayers, and Christian living. All of the children were brought up in The Haynes Chapel A.M.E. Church, and worked there faithfully until, they decided they wanted and needed to set out and raise families of their own. Marriage, however, had no adverse impact on their relationship with their church.

THE FREDERICK FAMILY

Charleston "finest" among the Frederick's. Between the Ashley and Cooper Rivers, a ship landed and off stepped a very handsome young man named Phillip. Phillip being virile, muscular and strong-in stature, was sold on the auction block at the old slave market in downtown Charleston, for the purpose of a stud man. Having been taken from plantation to plantation between Charleston and Orangeburg Counties, he finally settled in a small village, called "Lone Star." Here he met and married Lydia by jumping over the broomstick. From this union, nine children were born; Namely Andrew (Uzziah), Prince, Isaiah, Hampton, George, Rosa, Janie, and Emila. Those surviving and here today are the descendants of Prince and Emily.             '

THE HAYNES AND FREDERICK SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION

The two families frequently came together for their family reunion. An idea to put money in a pool for youth to go to college came about during discussions at their reunions. As the years past, Welton P. Holland decided to apply for non profit status and founded "The Haynes and Frederick Scholarship Foundation" in August of 1986. Since 1993 the scholarship foundation has provided at least two scholarships to deserving youth once a year. Recipients were also identified through the Prince George's County School System. It is the foundation's goal to expand and be able to recognize more students in 1998 and beyond.
